India's retail inflation rises to 5.52% in March; February IIP contracts 3.6% News, India news, letest news, entertament news
India’s retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), for March rose to 5.52 per cent from 5.03 per cent in February, showed government data on Monday. The upward revision was mainly on account of higher food and fuel prices.

The retail inflation recorded in March is higher than the previous three months, as per data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). However, the inflation number for March is higher than what most economists had predicted.
It may be noted that the inflation rate in food and beverages was high at 5.24 per cent. Fuel and energy inflation remained high at 4.50 per cent in March, compared to 3.53 per cent in February.
The Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) rose to 4.94 per cent in March from 3.87 per cent in February.
FEBRUARY IIP CONTRACTS
There has also been a sharp decline in industrial production. According to the data, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) contracted 3.6 per cent for February 2021. This is a sharper contraction compared to 1.6 per cent in January 2021.
The manufacturing sector output also contracted by 3.7 per cent in February and the mining output declined by 5.5 per cent. Meanwhile, the power generation sector grew by 0.1 per cent in February.
